The Proteaceae family – Protea
At Blossom Indulgence, these unique vibrant flowers are our favourite cut flowers, not just for their stunning beauty that creates a lasting impression in a flower bouquet, but they have a much longer vase life than most cut flowers. They dry beautifully and can be kept for even longer as a dried flower arrangement.
They are the perfect Flower Gift to send to someone special, especially during the hot and humid summers in Brisbane.
Interesting Flower Facts
The Protea is one of the oldest groups of flowering plants in the world, having existed for over 300 million years.
A floral dinosaur!!
Just Imagine ….. the Tyrannosaurus Rex may also have appreciated their beauty.
The Proteaceae family is divided into several groups, with some well-known examples being Banksia, Hakea, Grevillea, Telopea. They present in a variety of shapes, sizes, hues, and textures that make up more than 1,400 varieties. They are native to the southern hemisphere, primarily Australia and South Africa
Meaning and symbolism
Owing to its many shapes and colours the protea flower was aptly named after Proteus, the son of Poseidon. Well known for his wisdom, the defiant Proteus, preferred to nap on the Island of Pharos rather than prophesize. To deter those seeking his insights, he would change his shape at will!
The Protea therefore symbolises
• diversity,
• courage,
• change and
• transformation!
